Word that President Donald J. Trump is set to move America’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem has major prophetic import to many Christians, mainly protestants of the Pentecostal and Evangelical kind. It was to them that the president pledged to take action.
Will it herald major events? Might it provoke the long-feared “Armageddon”-style war? If Catholics tend to look more, when it comes to “signs,” at cultural upheaval and events in nature — for example, California wildfires — other denominations have an almost total focus on Israel.
It is an interesting time on all fronts, and now again Jerusalem, right before Christmas. (God willing, we’ll be leading a pilgrimage there next summer.)
Obviously, we don’t buy into concepts of a “rapture” and the like. And sadly, anti-Catholicism too often reigns, in these sects.
But that said, a survey of evangelical sites gives us a glimpse as to their beliefs and thinking.
From a site called Prophecy Update:
“The Bible has a lot to say about the apple of God’s eye, Jerusalem. The mere fact the Holy City is mentioned over 800 times in Scripture should tell what the Lord thinks of Jerusalem. There is no way to understand the current unfolding events around us or the prophecies foretold by the Word of God without understanding what God has to say about his favorite city, Jerusalem.
“Jerusalem is the center of the world in Scripture. It was David’s capital city; the site of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. It will be the place where Jesus rules the whole world with a rod of iron for a thousand years upon His return.”
From a site called Life Hope and Truth:
“Founded approximately 3,000 years ago, the city of Jerusalem has long been considered a holy city of peace—a concept embodied in its name. Although there is no consensus among scholars on the exact meaning of Jerusalem, “the oldest known form, Uru-sa-lim, has been considered by many to mean either the ‘City of Peace’ or the ‘City of (the god) Salem,’ but other interpreters, considering the name as of Hebrew origin, interpret it as the ‘possession of peace’ or ‘foundation of peace” (International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, “Jerusalem”).
“But there has been little peace for the residents of this famous city. Ironically, through the centuries this city has been the site of numerous conflicts. According to Eric H. Cline, the city has been “destroyed at least twice, besieged 23 times, attacked an additional 52 times, and captured and recaptured 44 times” (as quoted in “Do We Divide the Holiest Holy City?” Moment, March/April 2008).
“When Jesus Christ returns to earth, a great battle is prophesied to occur. Satan the devil and his two puppet leaders, known as the beast and false prophet, will stir up the nations of the world to fight against Christ in “the battle of that great day of God Almighty” (Revelation 16:14). The staging area for this battle will be a place called “Armageddon” or Har Meggido, located about 55 miles from Jerusalem. The battle itself will take place in Jerusalem. Zechariah prophesied that Christ would return to earth on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem and that the conflict will envelop the city (Zechariah 14:1-4). Prophecies show that Jesus Christ will destroy those nations that come up against Jerusalem (12:9; 14:2-3, 12).”
From Alpha News Daily:
“The Bible warns the destiny of the World is inseparable from Israel and Jerusalem. The Bible says God would one day re-gather the children of Israel back into their land from among many nations around the world. The Bible says they would be re-gathered in unbelief … God warns He is not re-gathering the children of Israel into their Land because they deserve it, but because His Name and His Word are at stake (see Ezekiel 36:17-23) … and because He loves them. They are His chosen people. The Bible warns God would then make Jerusalem a world trouble spot. The Bible says all nations of the world will turn against Israel. The Bible warns during this time ‘Gaza will be forsaken’ … and offers a stark warning. The Bible warns a coming world leader (the ‘Antichrist’) will rise out of 10 nations which once formed the Roman Empire and will enforce a peace plan or treaty (‘covenant’) upon Israel (‘upon the many’ – for many in Israel will be against it) … and then, after a 3½ year false peace, God warns He will send the children of Israel (and all the nations of the world) through a fiery trial unlike anything in the history of the world, to separate those who will turn back to God and His Word from those who have hardened their hearts against God and His Word (the ‘Apocalypse’).
“The Bible warns two-thirds of the people in Israel will be ‘cut off and die’ during this time. Then, one day when the armies of the world will gather in and around nation Israel (the coming battle of Armageddon) and when all seems lost for the children of Israel, the Bible says a believing remnant will recognize their Messiah from Scripture, and will call upon His Name. He will then return to save Israel. The Bible also tells us ‘after these things’ the little nation of Israel and the children of Israel will rule over all the nations on Earth, in peace, under her King and Messiah Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha’Mashiach in Hebrew). The Bible says all of the covenants, promises, curses, prophecies, and blessings God has made to the children and nation of Israel will be fulfilled …”
From the Jerusalem Post:
“The State of Israel is completing what the prophets of Israel foretold, a member of the country’s leading political party said at a biblical prophecy conference.
“’Today if you don’t see prophecy, you better get yourself a new set of glasses,’ Likud MK Yehudah Glick said at the Breaking Israel News ‘Prophecy in the News’ Conference, in Jerusalem’s Bible Lands Museum on Sunday evening.
“Zac Waller, the executive director of Hayovel, a Christian organization that brings volunteers to Israel to help strengthen the country’s small independent farmers in Samaria, said he sees the organization as being something “supernatural” that will keep growing as more and more of the nations will come to learn from the people of Israel.”
